Thank you for taking a moment to get to know me. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and now live in Robert, LA about 60 miles north of New Orleans. I am happily married to a native Louisiana metal artist, John Perilloux, and together we are raising our 12 year old and 7 year old daughters and 3 year old son. We love creating art and enjoying life fully.
I work primarily with forged iron but also enjoy forging copper, bronze, aluminum and silver as well. I do not cast any of the metal elements on my site. Everything is wrought on an anvil which means I heat the metal with fire until it is around 2000 degrees and them hammer it into different shapes. This is also called blacksmithing. The concept for the name of my website and business, Nancy Fe Designs, combines my name Nancy with Fe, which is the periodic symbol for the chemical element iron, which is the primary focus of my work. I chose not to use my last name, Perilloux (pronounced Pear-a-lou) in my business as it is not an easy name to spell or pronounce outside of French Louisiana.
I like to think that each metal element that I create is a small sculpture that is exhibited by the wearer. Each is a work of functional art that is enhanced by the wearer as an ornament.
Overall I take great pleasure in forging metal and working with iron as a woman and an artist. Iron is a medium that allows me to break a few boundaries and gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I use it in jewelry, as it is not a common material worked with by women or in jewelry. Normally it is viewed as an industrial material which is very masculine in nature. I enjoy pushing the envelope and using it in a way that is beautiful, strong and feminine.
I have a degree in Fine Art, with a focus on painting although I have never come across a medium that I didn't fall in love with. I was introduced to the art of blacksmithing or metal art, when I met my husband, John Perilloux (click here for his website of his one of a kind forged iron furniture) His expertise inspired me to pursue my own curiosity of the medium. I learned the techniques and skills of blacksmithing from him. I started off collecting his scraps of metal that would normally go to a scrap yard and forging them into my own works of art that I wore around my neck. I made them for myself but people would stop me in my tracks and buy the jewelry I was wearing when I was out in public, so I started making more and selling them at art festivals and shows. Eventually my passion evolved into my website, NancyFeDesigns.com.
